History
Christopher Columbus became the first European to set foot on this tropical region during his fourth and final journey to the Americas. Over the following centuries, explorers from England, the U.S., Germany, and Jamaican missionaries visited, contributing to the islands’ history and growth as a hub for trade and settlement.
Early Settlements and the Banana Boom: By the early 19th century, fishermen from Colombia and Nicaragua had settled on Bastimentos Island, and by 1855, immigrants from the Antilles were drawn to Bocas del Toro by the construction of the Panama Railroad. In the 1880s, the banana trade took root, particularly in Bahía de Almirante and Laguna de Chiriquí, transforming the local economy.
Landmarks and Cultural Fusion
In 1904, key developments shaped the town’s character, including the Municipal Palace and Central Park construction, which are still in use today. The vibrant fusion of Afro-Antillean, Indigenous, and other migrant cultures has left a lasting mark on the region’s local traditions, gastronomy, music, and dance.
The Name “Bocas del Toro” – A Tale of Legends
There are several theories regarding the origin of the name Bocas del Toro. Some believe Christopher Columbus named it after seeing waterfalls resembling a bull’s mouth. In contrast, others point to a large rock formation on Bastimentos Island that looks like a lying bull, still visible today. The thunderous sound of the waves crashing against the volcanic rock also resembles the bellow of a bull, adding to the myth. A final version ties the name to Boka Toro, the last indigenous chief of the region.
Regardless of which story you believe, this enchanting province has evolved into one of the Caribbean’s most sought-after destinations, offering both history and breathtaking beauty.
