Responsible Tourism in Bocas del Toro
At Divers Paradise Boutique Hotel, our relationship with Bocas del Toro goes beyond hospitality. Being part of island life means being committed to the people, traditions, and natural surroundings that shape the community.
Responsible tourism begins with involvement, understanding your surroundings, respecting them, and helping build a better tomorrow.
The Ocean as Responsibility
The sea defines Bocas del Toro. Coral reefs, mangroves, and marine life are not just attractions. They are part of daily life on Isla Colón.
Through Bocas Dive Center, our 5 Star IDC Dive Center, we promote responsible diving and participate in underwater cleanups, such as Dive Against Debris. These activities remove marine debris and raise awareness about reef protection and ocean conservation.
Through environmental education and hands-on participation, we encourage guests to respect coral reefs, avoid disturbing marine life, and adopt reef-safe habits.
Protecting the marine environment is an ongoing commitment rooted in the reality of living by the ocean.
Preserving Ocean Culture
The ocean also carries cultural meaning. Traditional cayuco rowing and maritime events remain living expressions of Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean heritage in Bocas del Toro.
We proudly support Cayuco Paunch, a local rowing team that represents the strength and continuity of cayuco tradition. We also collaborate with the annual regatta held every February, a nautical tradition that is part of Bocas del Toro’s cultural identity.
These events reflect the islands’ identity and continue to connect generations to the water.

Regional Flavors and Island Identity
Responsible tourism also means valuing what is produced locally.
Upon arrival, our guests are welcomed with locally crafted chocolate made from cacao grown in Bocas del Toro, including Native Chocolate products. Cacao has long been cultivated in the region by Ngäbe Buglé and Afro-Caribbean families. Today, small producers continue transforming it into artisanal chocolate that reflects the character of the island.
At Pier19, our oceanfront restaurant, we use fresh vegetables, tropical fruits, fish, and seafood from local suppliers. These ingredients shape a menu inspired by the Caribbean and its richness.
From cacao to seafood, these details allow visitors to experience Bocas del Toro through its landscapes and its tastes.
Society Engagement
We engage with community programs that strengthen the community long term, including supporting the Bocas Chess Club, which encourages youth development and critical thinking.
We also support Bocas Surf Experiences, a surf school for children and young people, and the José Pasito Anderson Marching Band from Rogelio Josué Ibarra School, both of which promote sports, culture, and community development on the island.
For us, being present in Bocas del Toro means being part of its rhythm, on land and at sea.
Travel With Awareness
Bocas del Toro is more than beaches and turquoise waters. It is a place defined by tradition, agriculture, sport, and community.
When you stay with us, you experience an island that is lived in, where the marine environment is respected, culture is active, and local dishes remain part of daily life.
